Atmospheric Corrosion Protection
Thermal Spray Coatings for Atmospheric Applications
Our thermal spray coatings protect steel and other metal substrates from atmospheric corrosion.
Long Term Corrosion Protection for Exposed Metal
Painting is often the first option considered for corrosion protection, but some applications demand a more durable solution.
Our thermal spray coatings work by applying a layer of metal, typically zinc, aluminium or a zinc-aluminium alloy, directly onto a prepared surface. The coating creates a protective barrier between the underlying material and the surrounding environment.
For atmospheric applications, this can provide excellent protection against moisture, oxygen, pollutants and other factors responsible for corrosion.
Unlike a conventional paint coating, the sprayed metal can also provide sacrificial protection. This means the coating itself helps protect the underlying steel if small areas become damaged during service.
The result is a corrosion protection system suited to structures and components where reliability and long service life matter.
Zinc Thermal Spray
Zinc is widely used for protecting steel against atmospheric corrosion. It provides both barrier and sacrificial protection, making it a strong choice for many structural and industrial applications.
Aluminium Thermal Spray
Aluminium coatings are commonly considered where components will face particularly demanding conditions, including certain marine, coastal and industrial environments.
Zinc-Aluminium Coatings
Zinc-aluminium alloys combine properties from both materials and can provide an effective corrosion protection system across a range of atmospheric conditions.
Metallisation can help you identify the right thermal spray process and material based on your application, operating environment and required coating specification.
What Assets Can Be Protected from Atmospheric Corrosion?
The big advantage of thermal spraying is its ability to protect everything from individual fabricated components to major pieces of infrastructure.
This includes:
- Bridges and highway infrastructure
- Structural steelwork
- Rail infrastructure
- Marine and coastal structures
- Wind turbines and renewable energy infrastructure
- Industrial plant and equipment
- Storage tanks and vessels
- Towers, masts and pylons
- Large steel fabrications
- Petrochemical and processing infrastructure
From inland industrial sites to coastal locations with high levels of salt in the air, the coating system can be selected around the conditions the finished component is expected to face.
Working With Us
Need a long lasting way to protect steel against atmospheric corrosion?
Tell us what you’re coating, where it will be used and what you need the finished coating to achieve.
For smaller projects, we can help you select and purchase suitable thermal spray equipment, giving your team the tools needed to carry out the coating process in-house.
For larger projects, Metallisation can take a more hands on role. Our experienced team can work with you to plan and complete the thermal spraying process, providing specialist knowledge and practical support from initial requirements through to application.
