First patents for metal spraying

Swiss inventor (pictured) Max Ulrich Schoop, invents a combustion process to melt wire and spray it onto objects. It is not long before he develops a wire pistol which is the prototype of our present Flamespray pistols.

Metallisation is born

Metallisation secures exclusive Great Britain rights to Dr. M. U. Schoop's metal spraying patents. Initially operating from John Thompson Engineering's Dudley works, the rapid demand necessitates a dedicated factory within two years.

Charles Clifford Limited

Control of the company passes to the group of Charles Clifford Limited. The Dudley factory now comprises of 3 ½ acres and there are 6 Metallisation companies in the group.

First in-house spray system

Metallisation produces its first, own design of flame spray pistol, the MK16 for applying zinc and aluminium coatings.

Metallisation expands

Specific companies are setup to offer the Metallising process and a dedicated equipment sales division is formed.

Forth Road Bridge

Metallisation was commissioned to metal spray the Forth Road Bridge, a landmark long-span suspension bridge. Opened in 1964, its 1006-meter main span was the world’s fourth-longest and the longest outside the U.S. at the time.

Arc spray systems developed

Fast, more flexible, twin wire arc spray systems developed. Metallisation produces its first Arcspray System, The Arcspray 200.

Metallisation continues to prosper

At its 50-year mark, Metallisation Limited is acquired by Cooper Industries, creating a ready market for zinc wire from Group company Charles Clifford Limited. Both companies thrive, and Metallisation begins exporting equipment and materials.

HVOF & Plasma systems developed

Metallisation enters the high end Engineering coating market with HVOF and Plasma spray systems.

Focus on customer support

All systems developed to make operation and maintenance easier as we grow our worldwide market.

Hall of fame

Founder William E. Ballard is inducted into the Thermal Spray Society Hall of Fame for his groundbreaking work in documenting the thermal spray industry's evolution through his anthology Metal Spraying and the Flame Deposition of Ceramics and Plastics.

MET-JET4L developed

Working with Aston University, Metallisation develops a pioneering spray gun known as the High Velocity Oxy-Fuel system - the Met-Jet 4L. The Met-Jet 4L secures the Lord Stafford 'Impact through Innovation Award'.
