Themal spray coatings for the oil and gas industry
The oil and gas industy have been using metal spray (or sometimes referred to as thermal spray) coatings for decades.
Applications fall into two categories, corrosion protection coatings and engineering coatings.
Corrosion protection coatings are typically applied by either flame spray or arc spray (sometimes referred to as the twin wire arc spray process).
Coating materials are commonly thermal spray aluminium (TSA), thermal spray zinc/aluminium (TSZA) or sometimes thermal spray zinc (TSZ). The selection of these materials depends on the environment and the life expectancy to first maintenance.
TSA coatings have been used in the battle against Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) for over 30 years and many coating projects still happening today.
Engineering coatings can be applied by all of the thermal spray and cladding processes and would normally change the surface properties of the object sprayed.
Engineering coatings in the oil and gas field are commonly applied to improve wear or chemical resistance such as HVOF applied Tungsten Carbide coatings or arc spray Inconel 625.
